Hello world! No seriously. Hi there world!

I can't wait to get started, hopefully you are as exited as I am!

Hi there! This is the very first post on my personal website JvdC.me. If you are reading this early April 2014: welcome to a new website which is getting filled with tons of useful resources and articles! If you are reading this in the future: welcome and feel free to browse around the useful articles!

Explaining it properly for the less advanced users.
What is the reason for creating yet another website that explains how to do things on the internet? Well, because there aren’t a lot of them explaining it properly for less advanced server administrators. I’m a self-taught website developer and throughout the years I’ve evolved from HostGator shared hosting to managing my own servers. I have never had any class regarding website developing or system administering. I did learn how to code in matlab, LaTeX and netbeans (java) through my bio-engineering studies. Almost everything I know regarding coding and server administration is by reading tutorials, following discussions on StackOverflow, ServerFault, AskUbuntu, asking questions to experienced sysadmins and most importantly experiencing it all.

On this website I will mainly cover the following topics:

  • How to properly set up server with the top of the line software to ensure maximum performance (e.g. NGINX, MariaDB, latest PHP, Varnish, memcache(d), APC(u),…)
  • How to secure your server or hosting block (e.g. rkhunter, fail2ban, deny hosts, initial server security setup,…
  • How to install WordPress and heavily optimize it. There might be some small tutorials for the basic stuff, but I’m not sure about that.
  • Tips and tricks I’ve learned (and am learning) along the way. This may be simple code snippets or hacks to make your live easier.

I must also warn you, it is very likely that I will go off-topic once in a while. Why? Because there is more in life than setting up a server. There is beautiful music, videos, games, photography,… I will share these things on this website. Hopefully you will rather love it than hate it.

I can’t wait to get started. You can follow me on twitter (@jvdcme) although I’m not really that active. Feel free to get in touch with me through the contact for and if you want you can subscribe to the monthly newsletter (at the bottom).
